I’ve had so many curious former colleagues, business associates, and classmates reach out to ask me about how my first month operating my own real estate business has been, so I figured I’d start a monthly blog to update everyone on business and life. I will attempt to be as open as possible (while respecting the privacy of my clients) throughout the blogging journey.
For those who haven’t realized, it’s been 1 month since I moved to Austin, and one month into running my own real estate business, Chasing Realty Group. It felt like a huge risk to move to a city where I knew practically nobody and had no business contacts to become a full-time REALTOR. Most days I still feel like it’s a risk - but with risk comes reward.
Let’s start with the things I need to get out of the way: It’s 100 degrees everyday, I’ve now become an avid stand-up paddleboarder, and I’ve eaten more tortillas in the last month than I have in my entire life. I’ve also been to a ton of networking events and have met quite a bundle of new friends. I live by the theme that the more friends you have, the more business you’ll receive, so those are a double-whammy.
Business has been starting on the right track. I immediately started working on developing partnerships with local organizations as a way of generating referral business, and to be just a couple weeks in and have more than 10 active clients means something is going right. I’m working on both the homebuying side, and the apartment/rental locating side. I’ve already had a simple client who leased an apartment with no effort -- a few calls, a few emails, one tour, and done. With that being said, I’ve also already had 3 clients completely ghost me after going on tours.
Then, of course, I’ve had a client who I spent two weeks talking with daily, who really wanted to move to Austin from out-of-state yet had unreliable income. After going back and forth with the leasing manager at the apartment she wanted to be in, we finally got her financially accepted. Only for her to decide the next day she was no longer interested in moving.
Learning is the most important thing I can do in the beginning. I’ve spent a lot of time becoming knowledgeable in regards to neighborhoods, apartment buildings, the local market on the leasing and buying side, and the best ways to work with different types of clients.
I’m excited to start September with a boost in advertising. I’m still developing partnerships with local groups, and now beginning to pay for marketing. Next week, I will have a published article with a popular local media group, digital/social media ads placed, and physical mailers distributed. Expect a report of how those pan out next month!
